When technology leaps faster then your office equipment:
Reconditioned printers can come to the rescue

In any busy office the printer is a major lifeline. At the time your company purchased its printer you probably spent roughly $1,000. Your company has come to depend on your trust worthy printer to produce original-generation, bold documents that dazzle your clients with their precision and clarity.

Consequently, when this office lifeline finally turns out its last page, you wouldn’t think that it would create a serious problem. The common solution is to go down to your local office supply center, pick up a new printer, hook it up, and you’re back to dazzling your clients. Right?

But, what happens when you discover that the printer won’t work?

What is occurring may be common problem; new printers are built with software that can’t always correspond with older computers.

So much for a quick and easy solution!

Industries with specific software programs, like that of architects and engineers use, may be more prone to this problem. As printers become more sophisticated, the software that runs them is often too complex for older computers.

So, what are your options?

  1. Purchase a new computer that will be compatible with the new printer. But that brings your company’s cost from $350 to $600 purchase to a $2,000 or more.
  2. Find an IT solution to your dilemma.
  3. Go the "reconditioned" route.

Where’s an "IT guy" when you need one?

If your business has an IT department, it’s possible that the technicians might be able to engineer a solution that will allow your computer and printer to communicate with one another. If this is not an option, your only choice is to subcontract that IT project to a firm that can help. This will increase your expenses. If that's not an option, another option is to purchase reconditioned printer.

The "Reconditioned Route"

Replace your malfunctioning printer with a reconditioned unit of the same age, which are becoming more popular and more plentiful. Cardinal Cartridge can provide you with updated inventory. Most of this reconditioned equipment is as good as new, and much of it comes with warrantees.

The advantage to going "reconditioned" is that your total cost is most likely going to be between $200 and $500, and you will be given an operating system that you are already familiar with.

When considering reconditioned printers, consider the following.

The laser logic: Lower per-page cost, more environmentally friendly Inkjet or laser? Our vote is "laser."

An ink jet printer can cost as little as $200 new compared to a new laser printer on sale for $700. Refurbished laser printers can be purchased for as little as $300. The ink jet price is misleading, when you consider the cartridges cost $45 a piece, and can only print approximately 500 pages.

The laser printer’s toner cartridges can be recycled, cost about $30, and print between 4,000 and 10,000 copies per cartridge. Printing cost is as low as 1/3 of 1 cent per page, saving thousands of dollars in the cost of operation (and not producing any environmental cartridge waste).

Laser printers are generally more software-friendly. Some features include software that can be used to program custom forms that print your company’s data and obviate costly pre-printed forms. Special MICR toner is made to print checks with magnetic characters that can be read by scanning equipment at financial institutions. Laser printers have become the choice of residential to large businesses like law, tax, and financial firms, and scientific laboratories.

Whether you purchase a new or reconditioned office printer, keep these few tips in mind:

  1. Printer maintenance can double its life -- which saves you hundreds of dollars.
  2. The "sleep mode" can increase your toner life. Leaving a laser printer on constantly can actually increase the number of pages a toner cartridge can yield. While in sleep mode, the printer will either rotate the entire toner drum or the paddles inside the drum, shifting the toner particles inside.

If you want to keep your computer and printer operating together, consider this -- if you have a good working system now, then a reconditioned office printer can keep harmony in the office.
